Tell us a little about yourself

I am an Electrical Engineer by trade, and in the earlier days of my career worked mainly in the industrial sector, at places such as Steel Works, Coal Mines, Power Stations and factory environments. I found working in the electrical industry very interesting as it involved liaising with many different trades so gave me an in depth understanding of how Building Services operate.

After about 12 years in the electrical industry I branched out into construction where I worked as a Site Manager and later a Contracts Manager for a large national House Builder. Working in construction gave me an insight into how important the fabric of a building is when thinking along the lines of Building Services and how they function.

I currently practice as an Energy Consultant carrying out surveys at Commercial Buildings.

In my spare time I am interested in Offshore Sailing and Motor Racing.


What do you enjoy most about being a CIBSE trainer?

I enjoy being a CIBSE trainer because it involves meeting likeminded people where we can discuss issues that they may have in their buildings and hopefully come up with suggestions for improvements.

Often on courses we have had delegates from as far a field as the Falkland Islands, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan and its fascinating to hear of challenges that they come across when operating their buildings and how they solve them. 

   

Do you encounter any challenges as a trainer?

I welcome questions from all delegates and the questions are often thrown open to other delegates, so we get different opinions. 

Usually the delegates are from different backgrounds and skill sets and I find this a good mix for an interesting course. 


What is your favourite part about your topic area? 

My favourite part of the topic area is, Energy Efficiency, and how buildings can be operated correctly and as efficient as possible thereby reducing Carbon Emissions and saving money.  


Why do you think that it’s important that building services professionals keep up with their professional development?

Regulations and Technology move so fast nowadays and modern buildings operate very differently to building of only 10 to 15 years ago, building owners are constantly looking for ways to operate their buildings more efficiently and make savings, so the building services professionals need to keep on top of what’s new.


If you could go back to your younger self when you started working in building services, what advice would you give yourself or would you try to change some of the decisions and actions done then?

I would not change much as I have worked in the Construction and Building Service industry all of my working life and because of this understand how buildings work, how to maintain them and how to operate them efficiently. 


What would you tell someone who is just about to start or consider working in building services?  

Get involved in everything that is going on at your work place and try to understand how new, and old, equipment works and how it might be maintained, if you are not sure don’t be afraid to ask questions. Participate in as much training as you can so you get an in-depth knowledge into building services that you may use now and in the future.

Embodied Carbon Award: A step towards net zero carbon

Now in its 15th year, the CIBSE Building Performance Awards is the only awards scheme to celebrate the measured performance of projects and products in use while celebrating the engineering consultancies and manufacturers that are contributing to a low carbon future.
