Tell us a little about yourself: 
I have over forty years of experience within the building services industry, which includes both industry practice and teaching and training. I still try and play squash regularly but on a social basis now. I have two lovely grandchildren who also keep me on my toes.

What made you become a CIBSE trainer?
I was made redundant from my last industry role and I still want to pass on my knowledge and experience to the engineers of the future. I also believe that the courses offered by CIBSE are high class and very informative.

As a new trainer, what are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to meeting a diverse range of course delegates and, as well as passing on my knowledge and experience to them; also learning from their experiences too. I am a big believer in the usefulness of shared experience as part of a training process.

What is your favourite part about your topic area?
An improved awareness of electrical safety provided throughout the course so that everyone gets home safely after their working day.

Why do you think that it’s important that building services professionals keep up with their professional development?
The industry is now all encompassing in terms of disciplines and constantly changing, we must have a broader working knowledge of all of the various systems and processes. Continuing professional development plays a vital part in this requirement. 

If you could invest in research in your topic area, what would it be and why?
I would want to look at removing as many of the traditional fossil fuel energy source services systems from buildings and replacing them with more passive options, integrated within the structure of a building where ever possible. I appreciate this is a very broad remit!

If you could go back to your younger self when you started working in building services, what advice would you give yourself or would you try to change some of the decisions and actions done then?
Nothing really, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I think that in general, I worked well with the technology and systems that were available at the time, the first project I worked on was a very large hospital project, which is still operating today with many of the original systems still in place. 

What would you tell someone who is just about to start or consider working in building services?
I would say ‘go for it’ but try and get as much rounded experience as possible, working across as broad a range of projects as possible, including both small and large, as they pose differing challenges.

Embodied Carbon Award: A step towards net zero carbon

Now in its 15th year, the CIBSE Building Performance Awards is the only awards scheme to celebrate the measured performance of projects and products in use while celebrating the engineering consultancies and manufacturers that are contributing to a low carbon future.
